Teams from West Cumberland Hospital are counting down to move into their new ward areas. There is now only three weeks to go and lots of work is going on behind the scenes to prepare for the big move!

Lat week, teams from the Children and Young people’s ward at West Cumberland Hospital, were amongst the first to get a sneak peak of their soon to be new home. The team have been taking part in training over on the new ward, and for some it was their first chance to see the new area and facilities.

The new ward has 14 beds in total, 2 of which have been designed for children and young adults experiencing emotional, behavioural and mental health challenges, as well as a specially designed paediatric oncology room, a mix of 3 and 4 bedded bays and 4 single rooms.

Each single room has en-suite toilet and shower facilities, and for the first time, a pull down bed for parents and guardians to use whilst staying with their child. The ward also has specialist bathing facilities so parents and guardians can provide personal care to their loved one. The ward will also have a family kitchen and rest area where families can make themselves a drink, prepare food and have some time away from the rest of the ward.

Ben Frampton, Lead Matron for Women’s and Children at NCIC said:

“It has taken a huge effort to bring this ward to fruition, our team have had a hand in the design, layout and what amenities would be available. So to be here today showing staff the vision brought to life is really special.  A lot of consideration has been given to ensure our patients and visitors are going to really benefit from the new ward. We’re delighted with the finished space.”

Ben continued; “The team spent time listening to patients and their families and really understanding what would improve their experience here, and I’m glad we have been able to put in place many of the things they have asked for including a designated family kitchen room, where parents can take time out to make themselves a cup of tea, or prepare some food away from the busy ward area.”

Elspeth Fox, Paediatric Staff Nurse was amongst the group touring the new ward area. Elspeth said: “The new ward, is lovely and bright and has been really well considered, we look forward to making the move across in the next few weeks.”
