Two new Admiral Nurses – to look after the needs of patients with dementia – have been appointed at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Leanne Story and Mark Weir have taken on the roles and work at The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Mark said:

“Our roles involve us supporting people with dementia, their families and carers at times of increased anxiety, vulnerability and uncertainty while in hospital and after discharge if needed.

“We are looking forward to working with different teams to make sure we have the right skills to deliver safe and effective dementia care with support from the Admiral Nursing Service.”

Leanne has been qualified for two years and is now Deputy Sister on Larch C.

Christine Musgrave, Matron at West Cumberland Hospital, said:

“These are the first Admiral posts in Cumbria and will support the care of patients with dementia and there family / carers both within the acute setting and in the community to help improve experience for patients and carers with dementia.

“Patients will be supported during admission through to discharge with key focus on patient care and experience which will also focus around treatment, discharge planning and support in the community by engaging supporting networks to enhance care which in turn will prevent future readmission.”
