This leaflet explains why you need to have more frequent diabetic eye screening tests during pregnancy, when you need to have these tests, what they involve and possible results.
About this condition
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused when diabetes affects the small blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye. Everyone with diabetes should attend eye screening when requested to, but when you are pregnant you need to be screened more frequently because the risk of serious eye problems is greater.
What does having this test involve?
Diabetic eye screening in pregnancy is the same as routine eye screening when you have diabetes. Screening staff will record your details and level of sight. They will put drops in your eyes to make your pupils larger so the retinas can be seen more clearly. They then take digital photographs of your retinas. The images will be analysed and you and your GP will receive the results within 3 weeks.
How often and when do I need these tests during pregnancy?
Your first additional eye screening test during pregnancy should take place soon after you are aware you are pregnant (unless you have had your screening within the last 3 months). You will be sent an appointment at your local screening venue. Should you wish to change that appointment please call 0345 0500 109.
It is important that you are screened within 6 weeks of the screening team being notified you are pregnant to allow a check of the back of your eyes to be made. The possible next steps depending on the results are:
- Next appointment at 28 weeks of pregnancy
- Next appointment in 3 months
- A referral to see a specialist if required
Possible results
The possible results of the screening test are:
- No retinopathy
- Early signs of retinopathy (known as background changes) More serious retinopathy that requires referral to a specialist.
