Who are we?

We are a team of experienced children’s nurses and health care assistants who provide nursing care to children and young people in the community. We care for patients with complex needs those with life limiting and long-term conditions as well as children with short term issues.

Our primary office is in Ulverston, but we cover a large geographical area. We cover all of the South Lakes and Furness, so anywhere in South Cumbria. Occasionally we can even venture into Lancashire and North Yorkshire. Patients need to have a GP in South Cumbria for us to be able to support them.

What do we do?

We manage a wide range of conditions including gastrostomy and nasogastric tube care, oxygen monitoring, wound care, blood sampling, intravenous antibiotics, nursing supplies, and continuing care assessments.

We can provide training for parents and schools to make sure the child/young person can still go about their daily activities.

This is not a complete list, so please contact us if you would like more information or think we could help.

What hours do we work?

We work Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm excluding Bank Holidays.

Who can refer to us?

We accept referrals from healthcare professionals, social care, education staff, and parents. Patients need to be registered with a GP in South Cumbria. Please download our referral form or email ncm-tr.ccnsouth@nhs.net

Once we receive and accept the referral

After receiving a referral, we will try to contact the family as soon as possible to try and arrange a first visit to do an assessment of the child’s needs.

When an appointment time is given, we try our best to stick to that time but as we have such a large area to cover, we can get delayed quite easily. If possible, we will let you know if we are running late.

We cannot always provide short notice appointments due to staffing and the size of the area, so please check with us first.

Supplies

If we provide you with supplies, we ask that you give us notice to get things delivered to you. The planning of the area can make it difficult. Where possible please give 5 days' notice. Otherwise, you can collect from Ulverston Health Centre if pre-arranged with us.

We will deliver regular supplies monthly. If you notice you need more or less then please do let us know and we can adjust the delivery.

Bladder and bowel

There is also a bladder and bowel team within the Children’s Community Nursing Service that can support children with constipation, daytime, and night time wetting. Your first port of call should be your Health Visitor or GP. They will then refer onto this service if needed.
