Occupational Therapy
Prosthetic Occupational Therapists within the Specialist Rehabilitation and Mobility Centre (SRMC) aim to enable people to maintain or improve their ability to carry out every day activities which may have been affected following an amputation. We will work together with you and your family or carers to help you overcome difficulties and enable independence in all areas of daily living.
As Prosthetic Occupational Therapists we work both on the ward and in the outpatient setting in the SRMC, working with you from before your amputation or shortly afterwards on the ward, providing rehabilitation and discharge planning right through to the outpatient setting as you return home and adapt to life following your amputation.
How can Occupational Therapists help you?
We will start by establishing the reason why you may have difficulties carrying out every day activities. We will ask you how you were managing before you had your amputation. With your permission this may also involve speaking to your family or carers. We will discuss with you what your goals are following your amputation and how we can support you in meeting these goals.
Occupational Therapy treatment may include:
-
Practicing activities that you find difficult following your amputation
-
Practicing the skills you need in order to do the things that are important to you
- Working with you to find new ways of doing everyday tasks including donning and doffing your prosthesis
- Prescribing or adapting wheelchairs/pressure relief following your amputation
- Prescribing equipment for use at home or assessing for adaptations at home
- Assessing your home environment to make things easier following your amputation
- Working with yourself and your employer to enable you to return to work
- Working with yourself to enable you to return to or commence new leisure activities
- Referring you to other or providing details of services to enable you to increase your independence further or seek support if required.
